3rd of March: Africa Environment Day and Wangari Maathai Day

An international day for raise awareness on sustainable environmental management and commemorate the immense environmental contribution of Wangari Maathai

Africa Environment Day is celebrated annually on 3 March. This international day was established in 2002 as a way of raising awareness of the pressing environmental challenges facing the continent. Since 2012, the Africa Environment Day has been celebrated in conjunction with Wangari Maathai Day, in order to pay tribute to the late Nobel Laureate’s green legacy.

Meeting of the Mediterranean Wetlands Committee

The French Ministry of Ecology hosted the 12th Meeting of the Mediterranean Wetlands Committee in Paris on 7-10 February 2016. 

The meeting brought together government officials, national and international organizations, and wetland experts from 24 Mediterranean countries to discuss and adopt a Framework for Action 2016-2030 « Wetlands for Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean Region ». The Framework for Action has been designed as an early contribution to helping countries to achieve some of the Sustainable Development Goals approved by the United Nations in September 2015. It is expected that with an active engagement of the Mediterranean countries and the donor community, by 2030 well-managed wetlands will have made a significant contribution to the well-being of people in the region and to the effective functioning of the natural systems.

A global view of environmental performance and country by country metrics to inform decision-making

The 2016 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is now available The EPI Report presents the latest environmental metrics and data to signal policymakers on where to improve performance, this index evaluates how 180 countries protect ecosystems and human health. The EPI scores national performance in nine issue areas comprised of more than 20 indicators. Environmental Performance Index reveals continue progress, as in access to water and sanitation, but countries have failed to reverse degradation of air quality and decline in fisheries.
